Biokinetics

What is Exercise Rehabilitation? What is a Biokineticist? What qualifications does a Biokineticist have?

A Biokineticist studies a 3 year undergraduate degree, before we can apply for an Honours degree in Biokinetics. Our subjects include Anatomy, Physiology, exercise Physiology, Pathophysiology, Biomechanics to name a few. After completing our Honours degree we are required to complete a 2 year practical before becoming a Registered Biokineticist. Biokineticists are recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and therefore the Medical Aids.

To understand what a Biokineticist does we must first understand what exercise Rehabilitation is. As we know the body consists of bones, ligaments (attach from bone to bone), tendons (attach muscles to bones), and of course muscles. Then we get joints, which allow us to move. The objective of the ligaments, tendons and muscles is to stabilise our joints so we are able to move freely and without pain. When any of these structures becomes overloaded in any way we experience pain. This overload can be caused by incorrect biomechanics, muscle imbalance (one group of muscles working harder than others), or trauma (accident, fall etc) or a sudden increase in exercise frequency.

The aim of the Biokineticist is to assess where the problem may be coming from and then draw up an appropriate exercise treatment plan, rehabilitation. We use specific exercises based on the outcome of the assessment to strengthen "weak" muscles, correct posture and muscle imbalance. Biomechanics and technique play an extremely important role, which is why it is recommended for you to see a Biokineticist for one on one treatment sessions and not just do the exercises on your own, until such time that you have decreased pain and a good understanding of your correct Biomechanics.
